Kunstenaar Tibo van de Zand werkend aan een sculptuur in boetseerwas

From Color to Contrast, from Canvas to Sculpture

Tibo van de Zand (1985) is a Dutch artist with a rapidly growing reputation. His paintings are known for their expressive style, warm colors, and direct emotional impact. In his work, landscapes are not merely depicted, but deeply felt. His oeuvre also includes a series of restrained black-and-white works in which stillness and the power of omission come to the forefront. Alongside his painting, Tibo works as a sculptor, creating both independent and commissioned sculptures in which material and form carry the same intensity as his painted work.

Utrecht in Color

Utrecht is Tibo’s home and an ongoing source of inspiration. The city, with its water, light, and rich history, continually offers new perspectives. This painting of Utrecht is anything but a traditional cityscape. It is a translation of atmosphere and emotion. There are no precise lines, only the energy of a living place.

With bold brushstrokes and a striking color palette, Tibo van de Zand captures the city as you can only experience it when you truly know it. A unique work for those seeking character on their walls.

About Tibo van de Zand

A Distinct Signature - a Recognizable Voice

Tibo works in a style strongly influenced by Fauvism, reminiscent of artists such as Henri Matisse and Kees van Dongen. His use of color is powerful and intuitive, often releasing realistic tones in favor of emotional expression. This gives his work a vibrant, almost pulsating energy.

With roots in De Bilt and his heart partly in Southern Europe, Tibo van de Zand moves between two worlds: north and south, heritage and experiment, stillness and exuberance. This tension gives his work depth, complexity, and a universal appeal.

A Free Visual Language

Tibo van de Zand was born in 1985 in Utrecht as the son of the renowned sculptor, painter, and multidisciplinary artist Jits Bakker (1937–2014). Growing up in a studio environment where art was not a profession but a given laid the foundation for his own artistic path. Yet he always sought to develop a voice entirely his own, independent of his father’s imposing legacy. That search led him from the forests of Utrecht to southern Spain, and from figurative work toward a much freer visual language in which color and movement take the lead.

The Colors of the South

The influence of Mediterranean light plays a major role in Tibo’s work. His studio in Málaga enriches his palette with warm tones, sunlight, and the openness of the Spanish landscape.
